Are you as bummed by the whole "crack down" of Seuss freebies as I am? Man.....I love Seuss and so do the kids, but unfortunately the Seuss company is not playing nice. Many bloggers have been told to take down any items or even freebies referencing Seuss or using "like-characters". I totally understand the Seuss company not wanting others to make money off his books and characters, but not even freebies??? That is not very teacher or kid-friendly. I mean teachers and kids are what made Seuss' books popular and loved the world over. We create wonderful classroom displays, envelope our students in his words and language play, and have such fun.....but that has all came to an end.
As a teacher, I will no longer celebrate Seuss and his books in my classroom. They are all gone! I will not celebrate his birthday or do other fun stuff in the name of Seuss. Now, at first blush that may seem ugly, but there are soooo many wonderful authors out there that WANT kids and teachers using their materials and give us at least some leeway to create free items to help other teachers and kids have fun with their books. Seuss company has decided not to do that. They have a complete right as it is copyrighted. But......then, I, as a teacher, have a complete right to banish their materials from my classroom. I will instead turn March into a celebration of other deserving authors.
This is bad for the Seuss company. I mean....to use any of the materials that used to be available you had to have the books, right? How much money did that company make from teachers and parents that were spurred to buy books because the kids fell in love with them at school? Plus, there were so many opportunities for the company to make even more money.....they had an army of teachers working in their favor. Ok, 'nuff said....it's over. I am over it!
I have re-done some of my former "Seuss" freebies. They were originally free and are still free. I have taken any reference to Seuss out and I have made sure there are no infringements of the company's copyright -- just fun, silly activities for those of you who choose to continue to use Seuss in your classroom. Of course, the great thing is....if you are boycotting Seuss like me, you can still use them too!
Here is one of the totally un-Seuss freebies:
It's a word wall game. I hope you like it!!
Here is another one along the same lines that you make like. It's a real word/nonsense word sort. I know many of us are working on that lately.
I do have one more that I am working on and will get that to you as soon as I am finished updating it!

I'm with ya - I wonder what's going through their minds? I bet if Mr. Geisel were still alive he'd tell them to "stop it, stop it, stop it now..." in perfect rhythm and rhyme...
ReplyDeleteOur school is participating in One School, One Book...so that's where our focus will be - not on Dr. Seuss' birthday or his books. Bummer...

I hear you. I read an article that a friend shared. We are forbidden to decorate a cake with the images of Seuss?! You can design a t-shirt as long as the characters don't resemble a Dr. Seuss character?!
ReplyDeleteSo, I am with you...as we celebrate reading this year, I am thinking of other authors to celebrate with!

You're awesome! I too have un-seussed my room. You said it so well what many of us feel. Teacher Power!!

Our school celebrates school wide, I to will celebrate, but not Dr. Seuss. I'l celebrate reading. I agree there are many wonderful authors who support teachers supporting them.
ReplyDeleteI agree! It's really sad how much everything is getting a crack down on. :/

I am really disappointed in the Seuss people as well. Thanks for sharing your freebies.

Finally in First
It is so sad that it has come to greed over giving the love of reading to a child. I too will reading with my class and celebrating Texas Independence Day and forget Dr Seuss this year! Thank you for the freebies!

I agree. I actually un-seussed my classroom some time ago. It's so disappointing to think that this is Theodore Geisel's legacy. I'm with Holly - I don't think he'd appreciate it one tiny bit.

Thanks so much Jeannie. I agree with all your points. So sad; so crazy; so greedy. Anyway, am going to use your cards with the blank dots as a fine motor activity for my homeschooler: she can fill in the dots with little circular stickers. And because she has lots of trouble writing, I will print and use all the word cards so she can build sentences with them (I will mix them in with a stack of other word cards I have from other fabulous bloggers). Love your work. Am so appreciative of your generosity.
ReplyDeleteI am right behind you on this one! Such a sad ending to what used to be a wonderful thing, but you are correct- there sure are tons of other authors out there that are wonderful and support teachers and parents! Thanks for the freebies-I am NeVeR disappointed with your products!

After I read NEA's Read Across America Logo and Usage Guidelines, I thought "Good grief, why even bother." With their stipulations, I'd rather do other fun things revolving around other pieces of literature. Good-bye, my enthusiasm in NEA's Read Across America campaign. Hello many other authors who write engaging pieces of literature. Hello event coordinators who haven't gotten too big for their britches.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Thanks for the freebie. . .I just pinned ya.

I am celebrating reading this week; not a corporation. It is a bit disappointing but fortunately, I have lots of other favorite authors.
